Although there is an ever-growing number of places to top up your electric car, the most convenient and cost-effective mode of charging is to charge at home.

home charge point offers a cheap and easy solution for charging your car but making such a large purchase can often be daunting. There is a lot of information out there about electric vehicles (EVs) and EV charging, and it can be overwhelming when researching your options.

We understand that sometimes, you would simply rather pick up the phone and talk to someone. Our home charge expert speaks with customers on a daily basis, helping them make the right decision to suit their needs.

We asked one of the team to talk us through the home charge journey with Mer.

People are often surprised at how easy the whole process is with Mer

As a Mer Home Charge Specialist, I regularly speak with customers who simply want to know more about how it all works; what happens on the day, what equipment they need to buy, will they even be able to get a home charger?

People are often surprised at how easy the whole process is with Mer. You can of course simply go ahead and order your home charger online, but I would always recommend speaking to an expert first before going ahead with your purchase.

Most people will only require a standard installation, where your charger can be fixed securely to a wall in a suitable location and no more than 15m from your power source.

We’ll ask you to take a few photographs for us to review, things such as your preferred location for your charge point, your power supply and, if you have off-street parking, your driveway or garage. We can then use the photos to work out whether you require a standard/non-standard installation.

Once we have everything through we’ll approve your installation. You don’t need to do anything else. We will call and arrange a day for your installation to take place, usually within 2 weeks of your order date, and we’ll send your home charge point directly to your address, neatly packaged in one box.

On the day of your installation, the process is pretty straightforward. The engineer will arrive at the agreed time and map out the charge point location and route for your cabling. Your power will need to be switched off for around one hour, so make sure you grab a cuppa while you can.

When the installation’s completed (the whole thing usually takes around 2-3 hours), your engineer will show you how to use your new charger and the smartphone app so that you can start charging straight away. There shouldn’t be any mess, but if there is, it will be cleaned up and taken away for you.

You’re covered for 3 years with your warranty, so any problems or even if you have any questions about your home charger, you just need to give us a call and we’ll help you get it sorted.

And that’s really all there is to it!
