The Client

A leader in breakdown recovery, The AA operates a fleet of around 2,500 roadside service vehicles.

The breakdown expert is switching selected patrol vans to EVs as it continues to decarbonise its business, moving towards its goal of Net Zero for its own emissions by 2035. Because of the nature of their work, these electric vans do not go back to a depot after their shift – they go home with the drivers. With this in mind, the AA needed an expert partner who could install reliable and user-friendly home charging infrastructure to support the vehicles.

Home EV chargers that were compatible with Mina Homecharge were also required. This is a software platform which ensures that employees don’t pay for charging work vehicles at home, as the employer is billed directly.

The Solution

Mer installed 7kW fast chargers at the homes of AA van drivers, enabling them to fully recharge the vehicles overnight. Each smart charger also integrates with Mina Homecharge, in line with the company’s needs. In addition, while out and about, drivers can access Mer’s public charging network via the Mer Connect app, and drivers have access to a wide public network thanks to our roaming agreements. The first phase of installations included one for Simon Ungless, group fleet manager for the AA, so he could see how it worked for himself.

Mer worked closely with the AA to throughout the EV charging procurement and installation process from start to finish. Mer’s expertise, coupled with its position as an independent provider, enabled it to go above and beyond a standard installation. Mer had the capability to supply the right charging infrastructure for the AA’s drivers, while also providing additional integration capabilities for the AA as a business.

Every installation to date, including my own, has been very smooth and straightforward.

Mer is continuing to work with the AA on the electrification of its patrol vehicles and is also exploring options for collaboration in other areas of business operations.

“For our roll-out of electric patrol vans, we needed a partner who could make the entire process simple and hassle-free for our drivers. Mer is able to provide an end-to-end solution, from procurement and installation to service and repair. Every installation to date, including my own, has been very smooth and straightforward.”Simon Ungless, Group Fleet Manager for The AA
